1 Continúa la oposición a la reconstrucción<br />Sanbalat, Tobías, Gesem el árabe y los demás enemigos nuestros descubrieron que yo había terminado la reconstrucción de la muralla y que no quedaba ninguna brecha; a pesar de que todavía no habíamos levantado las puertas en sus respectivos lugares.

2 Así que Sanbalat y Gesem enviaron un mensaje pidiéndome que me encontrara con ellos en una de las aldeas<br /> de la llanura de Ono.<br />Pero me di cuenta de que ellos tramaban hacerme daño,

3 de modo que les respondí con el siguiente mensaje: «Estoy ocupado en una gran tarea, así que no puedo ir. ¿Por qué habría de dejar el trabajo para ir a encontrarme con ustedes?».

4 Cuatro veces me enviaron el mismo mensaje, y cada vez les respondí lo mismo.

5 La quinta vez, el sirviente de Sanbalat llegó con una carta abierta en su mano

6 que decía:<br />«Circula un rumor entre las naciones vecinas, y Gesem<br /> me asegura que es cierto, que tú y los judíos piensan rebelarse y que por eso reconstruyen la muralla. Según sus informes, tú te propones ser el rey.

7 También informa que has nombrado profetas en Jerusalén para que proclamen acerca de ti: “¡Atención! ¡Hay rey en Judá!”.<br />»Puedes tener la seguridad de que este informe llegará a oídos del rey, de modo que sugiero que vengas a hablar conmigo del asunto».

8 Yo respondí: «Todo lo que dices es puro cuento. Tú mismo inventaste todo».

9 Solo trataban de intimidarnos, creían que podrían desalentarnos y detener la obra. De modo que seguí con el trabajo más decidido que nunca.

10 Más adelante fui a visitar a Semaías, hijo de Delaía y nieto de Mehetabel, que estaba recluido en su casa. Me dijo:<br />—Reunámonos dentro del templo de Dios y cerremos las puertas con cerrojos. Tus enemigos vienen a matarte esta noche.

11 Pero yo respondí:<br />—¿Acaso debería una persona en mi posición huir del peligro? ¿Acaso debería alguien en mi posición entrar al templo para salvar su vida? ¡No lo haré!

12 Me di cuenta de que Dios no le había hablado, sino que decía esa profecía contra mí porque Tobías y Sanbalat lo habían contratado.

13 Ellos esperaban intimidarme y hacerme pecar. De esa forma podrían acusarme y desacreditarme.

14 Oh Dios mío, acuérdate de todas las cosas malvadas que Tobías y Sanbalat han hecho; y recuerda a la profetisa Noadías y a todos los profetas como ella que trataron de intimidarme.

15 Los trabajadores completan la muralla<br />Así que el 2 de octubre,<br /> a los cincuenta y dos días después de comenzar la obra, se terminó la muralla.

16 Cuando se enteraron nuestros enemigos y las naciones vecinas, se sintieron aterrorizados y humillados. Se dieron cuenta de que esta obra se había realizado con la ayuda de nuestro Dios.

17 Durante esos cincuenta y dos días, circularon muchas cartas entre Tobías y los nobles de Judá.

18 Pues muchos en Judá le habían jurado lealtad porque su suegro era Secanías, hijo de Ara, y Johanán, su hijo, estaba casado con la hija de Mesulam, hijo de Berequías.

19 Constantemente ellos me hablaban de las buenas acciones de Tobías, y luego le contaban todo lo que yo decía. Por su parte, Tobías no dejaba de enviarme cartas amenazadoras a fin de intimidarme.

1 When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it—though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates—

2 Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono.” But they were scheming to harm me;

3 so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?”

4 Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.

5 Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter

6 in which was written: “It is reported among the nations—and Geshem says it is true—that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king

7 and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together.”

8 I sent him this reply: “Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head.”

9 They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.” But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands.”

10 One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, “Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you—by night they are coming to kill you.”

11 But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!”

12 I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

13 He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.

14 Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophet Noadiah and how she and the rest of the prophets have been trying to intimidate me.

15 So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.

16 When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.

17 Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them.

18 For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shekaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah.

19 Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.
