1 I will extol thee, O LORD; for thou hast lifted me up and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.

I will exalt you, LORD, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me.
2 O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.

LORD my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.
3 O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from Sheol; thou gavest me life from my descent into the grave.

You, LORD, brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit.
4 Let his merciful ones sing unto the LORD, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

Sing the praises of the LORD, you his faithful people; praise his holy name.
5 For his anger <em>endures but</em> a moment; in his will is life; weeping may endure for a night, but joy <em>comes</em> in the morning.

For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.
6 And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.

When I felt secure, I said, “I will never be shaken.”
7 LORD, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong; thou didst hide thy face, <em>and</em> I was troubled.

LORD, when you favored me, you made my royal mountain stand firm; but when you hid your face, I was dismayed.
8 I will cry unto thee, O GOD; and unto the Lord will I make supplication.

To you, LORD, I called; to the Lord I cried for mercy:
9 What profit <em>is there</em> in my blood when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? Shall it declare thy truth?

“What is gained if I am silenced, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness?
10 Hear, O LORD and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper.

Hear, LORD, and be merciful to me; LORD, be my help.”
11 Thou hast turned my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth and girded me with gladness;

You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
12 to the end that <em>I</em> may sing glory unto thee and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.

that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. LORD my God, I will praise you forever.
