1 <<For the Chief Musician. To the tune "The Lily of the Covenant." A miktam by David, when he fought with Aram-Naharayim and with Aram-Tzovah, and Yo'av returned, and killed twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.>> God, you have rejected us. You have broken us down. You have been angry. Restore us to you, again.
1 You have rejected us, God, and burst upon us; you have been angry—now restore us!
2 You have made the land tremble. You have torn it. Mend its fractures, For it quakes.
2 You have shaken the land and torn it open; mend its fractures, for it is quaking.
3 You have shown your people hard things. You have made us drink the wine that makes us stagger.
3 You have shown your people desperate times; you have given us wine that makes us stagger.
4 You have given a banner to those who fear you, That it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.
4 But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow.
5 So that your beloved may be delivered, Save with your right hand, and answer us.
5 Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered.
6 God has spoken from his sanctuary: "I will triumph. I will divide Shekhem, And measure out the valley of Sukkot.
6 God has spoken from his sanctuary: “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.
7 Gil`ad is mine, and Menashsheh is mine. Efrayim also is the defense of my head. Yehudah is my scepter.
7 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet, Judah is my scepter.
8 Mo'av is my wash basin. I will throw my shoe on Edom. I shout in triumph over Peleshet."
8 Moab is my washbasin, on Edom I toss my sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph.”
9 Who will bring me into the strong city? Who has led me to Edom?
9 Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom?
10 Haven't you, God, rejected us? You don't go out with our armies, God.
10 Is it not you, God, you who have now rejected us and no longer go out with our armies?
11 Give us help against the adversary, For the help of man is vain.
11 Give us aid against the enemy, for human help is worthless.
12 Through God we shall do valiantly, For it is he who will tread down our adversaries.
12 With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.
