Psalm 79

NIRV 1 God, an army from the nations has attacked your land. They have polluted your holy temple. They have completely destroyed Jerusalem. NIV 1 O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple, they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble. NIRV 2 They have given the dead bodies of your people as food to the birds of the air. They have given the bodies of your faithful people to the animals of the earth. NIV 2 They have left the dead bodies of your servants as food for the birds of the sky, the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild. NIRV 3 They have poured out the blood of your people like water all around Jerusalem. No one is left to bury the dead. NIV 3 They have poured out blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury the dead. NIRV 4 We are something our neighbors joke about. The nations around us laugh at us and make fun of us. NIV 4 We are objects of contempt to our neighbors, of scorn and derision to those around us. NIRV 5 Lord, how long will you be angry with us? Will it be forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire? NIV 5 How long, LORD? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire? NIRV 6 Pour out your burning anger on the nations that don't pay any attention to you. Pour it out on the kingdoms that don't worship you. NIV 6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name; NIRV 7 They have swallowed up the people of Jacob. They have destroyed Israel's homeland. NIV 7 for they have devoured Jacob and devastated his homeland. NIRV 8 Don't hold against us the sins of our people who lived before us. May you be quick to show us your tender love. We are in great need. NIV 8 Do not hold against us the sins of past generations; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need. NIRV 9 God our Savior, help us. Then glory will come to you. Be true to your name. Save us and forgive our sins. NIV 9 Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake. NIRV 10 Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Show the nations that you punish those who kill your people. We want to see it happen. NIV 10 Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants. NIRV 11 Listen to the groans of the prisoners. Use your powerful arm to save the lives of those who have been sentenced to death. NIV 11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you; with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die. NIRV 12 Lord, our neighbors have laughed at you. Pay them back seven times for what they have done. NIV 12 Pay back into the laps of our neighbors seven times the contempt they have hurled at you, Lord. NIRV 13 We are your people. We are your very own sheep. We will praise you forever. For all time to come we will keep on praising you. NIV 13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will proclaim your praise.
