1 Samuel 14:12-22

12 Y los varones de la guarnición respondieron a Jonatán y a su paje de armas, y dijeron: Subid a nosotros, y os haremos saber una cosa. Entonces Jonatán dijo a su paje de armas: Sube tras mí, que el SEÑOR los ha entregado en la mano de Israel

13 Y subió Jonatán trepando con sus manos y sus pies, y tras él su paje de armas; y a los que caían delante de Jonatán, su paje de armas que iba tras él, los mataba

14 Esta fue la primera matanza, en la cual Jonatán con su paje de armas, mató como unos veinte varones, como en la mitad de una yugada que un par de bueyes suelen arar en un campo

15 Y hubo miedo en el real y por la tierra, y por todo el pueblo de la guarnición; y los que habían ido a destruir la tierra, también ellos temblaron, y la tierra fue alborotada, y hubo miedo de Dios

16 Y los centinelas de Saúl vieron desde Gabaa de Benjamín cómo la multitud estaba deshecha y daban el uno al otro

17 Entonces Saúl dijo al pueblo que tenía consigo: Pasad revista, y mirad quién haya ido de los nuestros. Y cuando pasaron revista, hallaron que faltaban Jonatán y su paje de armas

18 Y Saúl dijo a Ahías: Trae el arca de Dios. Porque el arca de Dios estaba entonces con los hijos de Israel

19 Y aconteció que estando aún hablando Saúl con el sacerdote, el alboroto que había en el campamento de los filisteos se aumentaba, e iba creciendo en gran manera. Entonces dijo Saúl al sacerdote: Detén tu mano

20 Y juntando Saúl todo el pueblo que con él estaba, vinieron hasta el lugar de la batalla; y he aquí que la espada de cada uno era vuelta contra su compañero, y la mortandad era grande

21 Y los hebreos que habían estado con los filisteos de ayer y anteayer, y habían venido con ellos de los alrededores al campamento, también éstos se volvieron del lado de los israelitas que estaban con Saúl y con Jonatán

22 Asimismo todos los israelitas que se habían escondido en el monte de Efraín, oyendo que los filisteos huían, ellos también los persiguieron en aquella batalla

INTRODUCTION TO FIRST SAMUEL 14

This chapter gives an account of an adventure of Jonathan and his armourbearer smiting a garrison of the Philistines, 1Sa 14:1-14, which with other circumstances struck terror into the whole army; which being observed by Saul's spies, he and his men went out against them, and being joined by others, pursued them, and obtained a complete victory, 1Sa 14:15-23, but what sullied the glory of the day was a rash oath of Saul's, adjuring the people not to eat any food till evening which Jonathan not hearing of ignorantly broke, 1Sa 14:24-31 and which long fasting made the people so ravenous, that they slew their cattle, and ate them with the blood, contrary to the law of God, for which they were reproved by Saul, 1Sa 14:32-34, upon which he built an altar, and inquired of the Lord whether he should pursue the Philistines all that night till morning, but had no answer; which made him conclude sin was committed, and which he inquired after, declaring that if it was his own son Jonathan that had committed it he should surely die, 1Sa 14:35-39, the people being silent, he cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonathan; who had it not been for the resolution of the people that rescued him out of his hands, because of the great salvation he had wrought, must have died, 1Sa 14:40-46 and the chapter is cited with an account of Saul's battles with the neighbouring nations in general, and of his family, 1Sa 14:47-52.
