And as they cried out , and cast off their clothes,andthrewdustinto the air,

The chief captaincommandedhim to be broughtinto the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging;that he might knowwherefore*theycriedsoagainsthim.

Andas they boundhim with thongs,Paulsaidunto the centurion that stood by , Is it lawful* for you to scourge a man that is a Roman,anduncondemned?

When the centurionheard that, he went and told the chief captain,saying , Take heedwhat thou doest* : forthismanis a Roman.

Then the chief captaincame , and said unto him,Tellme*, artthou a Roman*? He said , Yea.

And the chief captainanswered , With a greatsumobtainedIthisfreedom.AndPaulsaid , ButIwas free born .

Thenstraightway they departedfromhimwhichshould have examinedhim:and the chief captainalso was afraid , after he knewthat he was a Roman,andbecause he hadboundhim.

On the morrow, because he would have known the certaintywherefore he was accusedof the Jews, he loosedhimfrom his bands,andcommanded the chief priestsandalltheircouncil to appear , andbroughtPauldown , and set himbeforethem.
