Geremia 40:9-16

9 E Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahikam, figliuolo di Shafan, giurò loro e alla lor gente, dicendo: "Non temete di servire i Caldei; abitate nel paese, servite il re di Babilonia, e tutto andrà bene per voi.

10 Quanto a me, ecco, io risiederò a Mitspa per tenermi agli ordini dei Caldei, che verranno da noi; e voi raccogliete il vino, le frutta d’estate e l’olio; metteteli nei vostri vasi, e dimorate nelle città di cui avete preso possesso".

11 Anche tutti i Giudei ch’erano in Moab, fra gli Ammoniti, nel paese d’Edom e in tutti i paesi, quand’udirono che il re di Babilonia aveva lasciato un residuo in Giuda e che avea stabilito su di loro Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahikam, figliuolo di Shafan,

12 se ne tornarono da tutti i luoghi dov’erano stati dispersi, e si recarono nel paese di Giuda, da Ghedalia, a Mitspa; e raccolsero vino e frutta d’estate in grande abbondanza.

13 Or Johanan, figliuolo di Kareah, e tutti i capi delle forze che erano per la campagna, vennero da Ghedalia a Mitspa, e gli dissero:

14 "Sai tu che Baalis, re degli Ammoniti, ha mandato Ismael, figliuolo di Nethania, per toglierti la vita?" Ma Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahikam, non credette loro.

15 Allora Johanan, figliuolo di Kareah, disse segretamente a Ghedalia, a Mitspa: "Lasciami andare a uccidere Ismael, figliuolo di Nethania; nessuno lo risaprà; e perché ti toglierebbe egli la vita, e tutti i Giudei che si son raccolti presso di te andrebbero essi dispersi, e il residuo di Giuda perirebb’egli?"

16 Ma Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahikam, disse a Johanan, figliuolo di Kareah: "Non lo fare perché quello che tu dici d’Ismael è falso".

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 40

This chapter treats of the release of Jeremiah, and the care taken of him; of the gathering of the princes and people of the Jews to Gedaliah, appointed their governor, dispersed about Judea, and other countries; and of a conspiracy against him, of which information was given him. The release of Jeremiah, where, and by whom, Jer 40:1-4; the liberty granted him to go to Babylon, or stay in Judea, as he thought fit; and, if he chose the latter, is advised to go to Gedaliah, appointed governor, or where he would; and is dismissed with food, and a reward, Jer 40:4-6; upon which he went and dwelt with Gedaliah, Jer 40:7; to whom also the captains of the dispersed forces joined themselves, to whom he swore, and bid them be of good cheer; and exhorted them to serve the Chaldeans, which he urged from the profit of it to them, and by his own example, Jer 40:8-10; and to whom also gathered the Jews in other countries, Jer 40:11,12; by the captains he is informed of a conspiracy against his life, and one of them offers to destroy the conspirator, which Gedaliah would not agree to, disbelieving the information, Jer 40:13-16.
