32 E Jefte marciò contro i figliuoli di Ammon per far loro guerra, e l’Eterno glieli diede nelle mani.

33 E egli inflisse loro una grandissima sconfitta, da Aroer fin verso Minnith, prendendo loro venti città, e fino ad Abel-Keramim. Così i figliuoli di Ammon furono umiliati dinanzi ai figliuoli d’Israele.

34 Or Jefte se ne tornò a Mitspa, a casa sua; ed ecco uscirgli incontro la sua figliuola, con timpani e danze. Era l’unica sua figlia: non aveva altri figliuoli né altre figliuole.

35 E, come la vide, si stracciò le vesti, e disse: "Ah, figlia mia! tu mi accasci, tu mi accasci; tu sei fra quelli che mi conturbano! poiché io ho dato parola all’Eterno, e non posso ritrarmene".

36 Ella gli disse: "Padre mio, se hai dato parola all’Eterno, fa’ di me secondo quel che hai proferito, giacché l’Eterno t’ha dato di far vendetta de’ figliuoli di Ammon, tuoi nemici".

37 Poi disse a suo padre: "Mi sia concesso questo: lasciami libera per due mesi, ond’io vada e scenda per i monti a piangere la mia verginità con le mie compagne".

38 Egli le rispose: "Va’!" e la lasciò andare per due mesi. Ed ella se ne andò con le sue compagne, e pianse sui monti la sua verginità.

39 Alla fine dei due mesi, ella tornò da suo padre; ed egli fece di lei quello che avea promesso con voto. Ella non avea conosciuto uomo. Di qui venne in Israele

40 l’usanza che le figliuole d’Israele vanno tutti gli anni a celebrar la figliuola di Jefte, il Galaadita, per quattro giorni.

INTRODUCTION TO JUDGES 11

This chapter gives an account of another judge of Israel, Jephthah, of his descent and character, Jud 11:1-3 of the call the elders of Gilead gave him to be their captain general, and lead out their forces against the Ammonites, and the agreement he made with them, Jud 11:4-11 of the message he sent to the children of Ammon, which brought on a dispute between him and them about the land Israel possessed on that side Jordan the Ammonites claimed; Israel's right to which Jephthah defended, and made it clearly to appear, hoping thereby to put an end to the quarrel without shedding of blood, Jud 11:12-27 but the children of Ammon not attending to what he said, he prepared to give them battle, and previous to it he made a vow, and then set forward and fought them, and got the victory over them, Jud 11:28-33 and the chapter concludes with the difficulties Jephthah was embarrassed with upon his return home, on account of his vow, and the performance of it, Jud 11:34-40.
