Isaías 49:1-18

1 El Siervo del Señor
es encomendado
Escúchenme, todos ustedes en tierras lejanas;
presten atención, ustedes que están muy lejos.
El Señor
me llamó desde antes que naciera;
desde el seno de mi madre me llamó por mi nombre.

2 Hizo que mis palabras de juicio fueran tan filosas como una espada.
Me ha escondido bajo la sombra de su mano.
Soy como una flecha afilada en su aljaba.

3 Él me dijo: «Israel, tú eres mi siervo
y me traerás gloria».

4 Yo respondí: «¡Pero mi labor parece tan inútil!
He gastado mis fuerzas en vano, y sin ningún propósito.
No obstante, lo dejo todo en manos del Señor
;
confiaré en que Dios me recompense».

5 Y ahora habla el Señor
,
el que me formó en el seno de mi madre para que fuera su siervo,
el que me encomendó que le trajera a Israel de regreso.
El Señor
me ha honrado
y mi Dios me ha dado fuerzas.

6 Él dice: «Harás algo más que devolverme al pueblo de Israel.
Yo te haré luz para los gentiles,
y llevarás mi salvación a los confines de la tierra».

7 El Señor
, el Redentor
y Santo de Israel,
le dice al que es despreciado y rechazado por las naciones,
al que es el siervo de los gobernantes:
«Los reyes se pondrán en posición de firmes cuando tú pases.
Los príncipes se inclinarán hasta el suelo
por causa del Señor
, el fiel,
el Santo de Israel, que te ha escogido».

8 Promesas de restauración para Israel
Esto dice el Señor
:
«En el momento preciso te responderé;
en el día de salvación te ayudaré.
Te protegeré y te daré a las naciones
para que seas mi pacto con ellas.
Por medio de ti restableceré la tierra de Israel
y la devolveré a su propio pueblo.

9 Les diré a los prisioneros: “Salgan en libertad”,
y a los que están en tinieblas: “Vengan a la luz”.
Ellos serán mis ovejas, que se apacentarán en pastos verdes
y en colinas que antes estaban desiertas.

10 No tendrán hambre ni sed
y el sol ardiente ya no los alcanzará.
Pues el Señor
en su misericordia los guiará;
los guiará junto a aguas frescas.

11 Y convertiré mis montes en senderos llanos para ellos.
Las carreteras se levantarán por encima de los valles.

12 ¡Miren! Mi pueblo regresará desde muy lejos;
desde tierras del norte y del occidente,
y desde tan al sur como Egipto».

13 ¡Oh, cielos, canten de alegría!
¡Oh, tierra, gózate!
¡Oh montes, prorrumpan en cantos!
Pues el Señor
ha consolado a su pueblo
y le tendrá compasión en medio de su sufrimiento.

14 Sin embargo, Jerusalén
dice: «El Señor
me ha abandonado;
el Señor me ha olvidado».

15 «¡Jamás! ¿Puede una madre olvidar a su niño de pecho?
¿Puede no sentir amor por el niño al que dio a luz?
Pero aun si eso fuera posible,
yo no los olvidaría a ustedes.

16 Mira, he escrito tu nombre en las palmas de mis manos.
En mi mente siempre está la imagen de las murallas de Jerusalén convertidas en ruinas.

17 Dentro de poco tus descendientes regresarán,
y los que procuran destruirte se irán.

18 Mira a tu alrededor y observa,
porque todos tus hijos volverán a ti.
Tan cierto como que yo vivo —dice el Señor
—,
ellos serán como joyas o adornos de novia para que tú los exhibas.

Isaías 49:1-18 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO ISAIAH 49

This is a prophecy concerning Christ, and redemption by him; and of the enlargement of the church in the latter day, by the conversion of Jews and Gentiles; which the isles, and people afar off, are exhorted to listen and hearken to, delivered out by the prophet, in the person of Christ; who gives an account of his call to his office, and the time of it; of what the Lord did for him, and said unto him, Isa 49:1-3, then follows a complaint of his labouring in vain, and a correction of it, Isa 49:4 and a further declaration of his call and appointment to office, and of each of the parts of the work assigned him, with encouragement to it, Isa 49:5,6. Christ is again represented under discouraging circumstances, as despised of men, abhorred by the nation, and a servant of rulers; who is encouraged by divine promises that kings should rise up before him, and worship him; that God would be faithful to his promise to him, and yet choose him, hear and help him, at a proper time; preserve him, and give him for a covenant to the people, to the establishment of the earth, and making it habitable, Isa 49:7,8 for the release of prisoners, and feeding, leading, and guiding them, and removing all difficulties out of the way, Isa 49:9-11 when the calling of the Gentiles is foretold, which would occasion great joy in the world, Isa 49:12,13 yet the church is introduced as complaining that she was forsaken of God, Isa 49:14 which is denied, and the contrary affirmed; being dear to the Lord as a sucking child to its mother, and more so; never forgotten by him, and always under his care, Isa 49:16, and, for her comfort, she is assured that those who had destroyed and made her waste should be removed; and that she should have converts that would be an ornament to her, and these numerous, insomuch that the place of their habitation would be too strait and narrow, and which would be matter of astonishment to her, Isa 49:17-21 and, besides those that would be converted in the land of Judea, there would be great numbers in the Gentile world converted by the power of God accompanying his Gospel, set up as a standard there, kings and queens countenancing and encouraging the interest of Christ, Isa 49:22,23 and yet still it is questioned whether the church should be delivered from her oppressors, Isa 49:24 to which it is answered, that she should be delivered, and her persecutors destroyed; by which it would be known that the Lord is the Redeemer and Saviour of his people, Isa 49:25,26.
