Isaías 36:3-13

3 Estos son los funcionarios que salieron a reunirse con ellos: Eliaquim, hijo de Hilcías, administrador del palacio; Sebna, secretario de la corte; y Joa, hijo de Asaf, historiador del reino.

4 Senaquerib amenaza a Jerusalén
Entonces el jefe del Estado Mayor del rey asirio les dijo que le transmitieran a Ezequías el siguiente mensaje:
«El gran rey de Asiria dice: ¿En qué confías que te da tanta seguridad?

5 ¿Acaso crees que simples palabras pueden sustituir la fuerza y la capacidad militar? ¿Con quién cuentas para haberte rebelado contra mí?

6 ¿Con Egipto? Si te apoyas en Egipto, será como una caña que se quiebra bajo tu peso y te atraviesa la mano. ¡El faraón, rey de Egipto, no es nada confiable!

7 »Tal vez me digas: “¡Confiamos en el Señor
nuestro Dios!”; pero ¿no es él a quien Ezequías insultó? ¿Acaso no fue Ezequías quien derribó sus santuarios y altares, e hizo que todos en Judá y en Jerusalén adoraran solo en el altar que hay aquí, en Jerusalén?

8 »¡Se me ocurre una idea! Llega a un acuerdo con mi amo, el rey de Asiria. Yo te daré dos mil caballos, ¡si es que puedes encontrar esa cantidad de hombres para que los monten!

9 Con tu pequeño ejército, ¿cómo se te ocurre desafiar siquiera al contingente más débil de las tropas de mi amo, aunque contaras con la ayuda de los carros de guerra y sus conductores de Egipto?

10 Es más, ¿crees que hemos invadido tu tierra sin la dirección del Señor
? El Señor
mismo nos dijo: “¡Ataquen esta tierra y destrúyanla!”».

11 Entonces tanto Eliaquim como Sebna y Joa le dijeron al jefe del Estado Mayor asirio:
—Por favor, háblanos en arameo porque lo entendemos bien. No hables en hebreo,
porque oirá la gente que está sobre la muralla.

12 Pero el jefe del Estado Mayor de Senaquerib respondió:
—¿Ustedes creen que mi amo les envió este mensaje solo a ustedes y a su amo? Él quiere que todos los habitantes lo oigan porque, cuando sitiemos a esta ciudad, ellos sufrirán junto con ustedes. Tendrán tanta hambre y tanta sed que comerán su propio excremento y beberán su propia orina.

13 Después el jefe del Estado Mayor se puso de pie y le gritó en hebreo a la gente que estaba sobre la muralla: «¡Escuchen este mensaje del gran rey de Asiria!

Isaías 36:3-13 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO ISAIAH 36

In this chapter we have an account of the king Assyria's invasion of Judea, and of the railing speech of Rabshakeh his general, to discourage the ministers and subjects of the king of Judah. The time and success of the invasion are observed in Isa 36:1 the messenger the former king sent to the latter, and from whence, and with whom, he conferred, Isa 36:2,3, the speech of the messenger, which consists of two parts; the first part is directed to the ministers of Hezekiah, showing the vain confidence of their prince in his counsels and strength for war, in the king of Egypt, and in his chariots and horsemen, and even in the Lord himself, pretending that he came by his orders to destroy the land, Isa 36:4-10. The other part is directed to the common people on the wall, he refusing to speak in the Syrian language, as desired, Isa 36:11,12, dissuading them from hearkening to Hezekiah to their own deception; persuading them to come into an agreement with him for their own safety and good; observing to them that none of the gods of the nations could deliver them out of his master's hands, and therefore it was in vain for them to expect deliverance from the Lord their God, Isa 36:13-20, to which neither ministers nor people returned any answer; but the former went with their clothes rent to Hezekiah, and reported what had been said, Isa 36:21,22.
