Jeremías 42:1-8

1 Entonces se acercaron Johanán hijo de Carea y Azarías^[a] hijo de Osaías, junto con los jefes militares y todo el pueblo, desde el más chico hasta el más grande,

2 y le dijeron al profeta Jeremías:—Por favor, atiende a nuestra súplica y ruega al SEÑOR tu Dios por todos nosotros los que quedamos. Como podrás darte cuenta, antes éramos muchos, pero ahora quedamos solo unos cuantos.

3 Ruega para que el SEÑOR tu Dios nos indique el camino que debemos seguir, y lo que debemos hacer.

4 Jeremías les respondió:—Ya los he oído. Voy a rogar al SEÑOR, al Dios de ustedes, tal como me lo han pedido. Les comunicaré todo lo que el SEÑOR me diga, y no les ocultaré absolutamente nada.

5 Ellos le dijeron a Jeremías:—Que el SEÑOR tu Dios sea un testigo fiel y verdadero contra nosotros, si no actuamos conforme a todo lo que él nos ordene por medio de ti.

6 Sea o no de nuestro agrado, obedeceremos la voz del SEÑOR nuestro Dios, a quien te enviamos a consultar. Así, al obedecer la voz del SEÑOR nuestro Dios, nos irá bien.

7 Diez días después, la palabra del SEÑOR vino a Jeremías.

8 Este llamó a Johanán hijo de Carea, a todos los jefes militares que lo acompañaban, y a todo el pueblo, desde el más chico hasta al más grande,

Jeremías 42:1-8 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH CAHPTER 42

This chapter contains a request of the Jews to Jeremiah, to pray to the Lord for them to direct them, and the Lord's answer to it. The request is made by the captains and all the people, Jer 42:1-3; which Jeremiah undertook to present to the Lord, Jer 42:4; they promising to go according to the direction that should be given, Jer 42:5,6. After ten days an answer is returned, and the prophet calls the captains and people together to hear it, Jer 42:7,8; the purport of which was, that if they continued in the land of Judah, it would be well with them, and they would be safe, Jer 42:9-12; but if they went into Egypt, they should die by the sword, famine, and pestilence, and be a curse and reproach, and never see their own land more, Jer 42:13-18; they are charged with dissimulation and disobedience, Jer 42:19-21; and the chapter is concluded with an assurance of their perishing by the above judgments in the place they were desirous of dwelling in, Jer 42:22.
