Jeremías 44:14-24

14 Y del remanente de Judá que entraron en tierra de Egipto para morar allí, no habrá quien escape, ni quien quede vivo, para volver a la tierra de Judá, por la cual suspiran ellos por volver para habitar allí; porque no volverán sino algunos fugitivos

15 Entonces todos los que sabían que sus mujeres habían ofrecido sahumerios a dioses ajenos, y todas las mujeres que estaban presentes, una gran concurrencia, y todo el pueblo que habitaba en tierra de Egipto, en Patros, respondieron a Jeremías, diciendo

16 La palabra que nos has hablado en nombre del SEÑOR, no la oiremos de ti

17 antes pondremos ciertamente por obra toda palabra que ha salido de nuestra boca, para ofrecer sahumerios a la reina del cielo, y derramándole libaciones, como hemos hecho nosotros y nuestros padres, nuestros reyes y nuestros príncipes, en las ciudades de Judá y en las plazas de Jerusalén, y fuimos llenos de pan, y estuvimos alegres, y nunca vimos mal

18 Mas desde que cesamos de ofrecer sahumerios a la reina del cielo, y de derramarle libaciones, nos falta todo, y a espada y a hambre somos consumidos

19 Y cuando nosotras ofrecimos sahumerios a la reina del cielo, y le derramamos libaciones, ¿Por ventura le hicimos tortas para tributarle culto, y le derramamos libaciones, sin nuestros maridos

20 Y habló Jeremías a todo el pueblo, a los hombres y a las mujeres, y a todo el vulgo que le había respondido esto, diciendo

21 ¿Por ventura no se ha acordado el SEÑOR, y no ha venido a su memoria el sahumerio que ofrecisteis en las ciudades de Judá, y en las plazas de Jerusalén, vosotros y vuestros padres, vuestros reyes y vuestros príncipes, y el pueblo de la tierra

22 Y no pudo sufrir más el SEÑOR a causa de la maldad de vuestras obras, a causa de las abominaciones que habíais hecho; por tanto, vuestra tierra fue puesta en asolamiento, en espanto, y en maldición, hasta no quedar morador, como sucede hoy

23 Porque ofrecisteis sahumerios, y pecasteis contra el SEÑOR, y no escuchasteis la voz del SEÑOR, ni anduvisteis en su ley, ni en sus derechos, ni en sus testimonios; por tanto, ha venido sobre vosotros este mal, como sucede hoy

24 Y dijo Jeremías a todo el pueblo, y a todas las mujeres: Oíd palabra del SEÑOR, todos los de Judá que estáis en tierra de Egipto

Jeremías 44:14-24 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 44

This chapter contains a sermon of Jeremiah's to the Jews in Egypt, reproving them for their idolatry there; their answer to it, expressing their resolution to continue in their idolatrous practices; and a denunciation of judgments upon them, of which a sign is given. The sermon begins with observing to them the destruction of Jerusalem, and the causes of it, idolatry and contempt of the prophets, Jer 44:1-6; then follows an expostulation with the present Jews for doing the same things, and exposing themselves and their posterity to the same punishment, Jer 44:7-10; upon which they are threatened with the sore judgments of God that should come upon them, and cut them off in general, Jer 44:11-14; yet such were the impudence and obstinacy of this people, that they declared they would not hearken to the prophet, but persist in their idolatry; it having been better with them when they practised it than when they left it, Jer 44:15-19; to which the prophet replies by observing, that for the idolatry of their fathers their land was become a desolation and a curse, as at this day, Jer 44:20-23; and assures them that destruction would come from the Lord upon them, which he had swore to, Jer 44:24-28; and a sign of it is given; the delivery of the king of Egypt into the hand of the king of Babylon, Jer 44:29,30.
