321They came to a placenamedGethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sithereuntil I have prayed."
33
And He took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be very2distressed and troubled.
34
And He said to them, "3My soul is deeplygrieved to the point of death; remainhere and keepwatch."
35
And He went a littlebeyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, 4the hour might pass Him by.
36
And He was saying, "5Abba! Father! Allthings are possible for You; removethiscup from Me; 6yet not what I will, but what You will."
37
And He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keepwatch for onehour?
38
"7Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
39
Again He wentaway and prayed, saying the samewords.
40
And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not knowwhat to answer Him.
41
And He came the thirdtime, and said to them, "Are you stillsleeping and resting? It is enough; 8the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.
42
"Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!"
Betrayal and Arrest
439Immediately while He was stillspeaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied* by a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chiefpriests and the scribes and the elders.
44
Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, "Whomever* I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him awayunderguard."
45
After coming, Judas immediatelywent to Him, saying, "10Rabbi!" and kissed Him.
51
A youngman was following Him, wearing nothing but a linensheetover his naked body; and they seized him.
52
But he pulledfree of the linensheet and escapednaked.
Jesus before His Accusers
5312They ledJesusaway to the highpriest; and all the chiefpriests and the elders and the scribesgatheredtogether.
54
Peter had followed Him at a distance, 13right into 14the courtyard of the highpriest; and he was sitting with the officers and 15warming himself at the fire.
55
Now the chiefpriests and the whole16Council kept trying to obtaintestimonyagainstJesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any.
56
For many were givingfalsetestimonyagainst Him, but their testimony was not consistent.
57
Somestood up and began to givefalsetestimonyagainst Him, saying,
58
"We heard Him say, '17I will destroythistemplemade with hands, and in threedays I will buildanothermadewithouthands.' "
59
Not even in thisrespect was their testimonyconsistent.
60
The highprieststood up and came forward* and questionedJesus, saying, "Do You not answer? What is it that thesemen are testifyingagainst You?"
61
18But He keptsilent and did not answer. 19Again the highpriest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
62
And Jesussaid, "I am; and you shall see20THE SON OF MANSITTING AT THE RIGHTHAND OF POWER, and 21COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."
63
22Tearing his clothes, the highpriestsaid, "Whatfurtherneed do we have of witnesses?
64
"You have heard the 23blasphemy; how does it seem to you?" And they allcondemned Him to be deserving of death.
65
Somebegan to 24spit at Him, and 25to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, "26Prophesy!" And the officersreceived Him with slaps in the face.
Peter's Denials
6627As Peter was below in 28the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the highpriestcame,
67
and seeingPeter29warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You also were with Jesus the 30Nazarene."
68
But he denied it, saying, "I neitherknownorunderstandwhat you are talking about." And he 31went out onto the porch. and a roostercrowed.871
69
The servant-girlsaw him, and beganoncemore to say to the bystanders, "This is one of them!"
70
But again32he denied it. And after a littlewhile the bystanders were againsaying to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, 33for you are a Galileantoo."
71
But he began to curse and swear, "I do not knowthisman you are talking about!"
72
Immediately a roostercrowed a secondtime. And PeterrememberedhowJesus had made the remark to him, "Before34a roostercrowstwice, you will deny Me threetimes." And he began to weep.
