Psalm 129:1-7

1 Ein Stufenlied. Oftmals haben sie mich bedrängt von meiner Jugend an, sage doch Israel,

2 oftmals haben sie mich bedrängt von meiner Jugend an; dennoch haben sie mich nicht übermocht.

3 Pflüger haben auf meinem Rücken gepflügt, haben lang gezogen ihre Furchen.

4 Jehova ist gerecht; er hat durchschnitten das Seil der Gesetzlosen.

5 Mögen beschämt werden und zurückweichen alle, die Zion hassen!

6 Mögen sie sein wie das Gras der Dächer, welches verdorrt, ehe man es ausrauft,

7 womit der Schnitter seine Hand nicht füllt, noch der Garbenbinder seinen Schoß;

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 129

\\<>\\. This psalm was written in later times, after many of the distresses of Israel; very probably upon the Jews return from the Babylonish captivity, by Ezra, or some other godly person. Aben Ezra says the psalmist speaks in the language of Israel in captivity; and the same is the sense of Kimchi and Arama. The Syriac inscription is, ``a psalm without a name, concerning the distress of the people; but as to us, it intimates to us the victory and triumph of the worshippers.''
