Salmi 140:2-12

2 I quali macchinano de’ mali nel cuore, E tuttodì muovono guerre.

3 Aguzzano la lor lingua come il serpente; Veleno d’aspido è sotto alle lor labbra. Sela.

4 Preservami, o Signore, dalle mani dell’empio; Guardami dall’uomo violento; Che hanno macchinato di far cadere i miei piedi.

5 I superbi mi hanno nascosto un laccio, e delle funi; Mi hanno tesa una rete sul sentiero; Mi hanno poste delle trappole. Sela.

6 Io ho detto al Signore: Tu sei il mio Dio; O Signore, porgi l’orecchio al grido delle mie supplicazioni.

7 O Signore Iddio, che sei la forza della mia salute, Tu hai coperto il mio capo nel giorno dell’armi;

8 O Signore, non concedere agli empi ciò che desiderano; Non dar compimento a’ lor disegni, onde s’innalzino. Sela.

9 Fa’ che la perversità delle labbra Di coloro che m’intorniano copra loro la testa.

10 Caggiano loro addosso carboni accesi; Trabocchili Iddio nel fuoco. In fosse profonde, onde non possano risorgere.

11 Non sia l’uomo maldicente stabilito in terra; Il male cacci l’uomo violento in precipizii.

12 Io so che il Signore farà ragione all’afflitto, E diritto a’ poveri.

Salmi 140:2-12 Meaning and Commentary

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. This psalm, A ben Ezra says, was composed by David before he was king; and Kimchi says, it is concerning Doeg and the Ziphites, who calumniated him to Saul; and, according to our English contents, it is a prayer of David to be delivered from Saul and Doeg. The Syriac inscription is, "said by David, when Saul threw a javelin at him to kill him, but it struck the wall; but, spiritually, the words of him that cleaves to God, and contends with his enemies." R. Obadiah says, it was made at the persecution of David by Saul, which was before the kingdom of David; as the persecution (of Gog) is before the coming of the Messiah. It is indeed before his spiritual coming, but not before his coming in the flesh; and David may be very well considered in the psalm as a type of Christ, for he was particularly so in his sufferings, as well as in other things.
