Salmi 97:1-11

1 L’Eterno regna; gioisca la terra, la moltitudine delle isole si rallegri.

2 Nuvole ed oscurità lo circondano; giustizia ed equità son le basi del suo trono.

3 Un fuoco lo precede e consuma i suoi nemici d’ogn’intorno.

4 I suoi lampi illuminano il mondo; la terra lo vede e trema.

5 I monti si struggono come cera alla presenza dell’Eterno, alla presenza del Signore di tutta la terra.

6 I cieli annunziano la sua giustizia, e tutti i popoli vedono la sua gloria.

7 Son confusi tutti quelli che adoran le immagini, che si glorian degl’idoli; si prostrano dinanzi a lui tutti gli dèi.

8 Sion l’ha udito e si è rallegrata, e le figliuole di Giuda hanno esultato per i tuoi giudizi, o Eterno!

9 Poiché tu, o Eterno, sei l’Altissimo su tutta la terra; tu sei sommamente elevato sopra tutti gli dèi.

10 O voi che amate l’Eterno, odiate il male! Egli custodisce le anime de’ suoi fedeli, li libera dalla mano degli empi.

11 La luce è seminata per il giusto, e la gioia per i diritti di cuore.

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 97

This psalm is ascribed to David by the Septuagint, Vulgate Latin, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions. It is of the same argument, and upon the same subject, as the preceding, the coming and kingdom of Christ; and that it respects his first coming into the world, when angels were called upon to worship him, appears from Ps 97:7 compared with Heb 1:6 though it is expressed in such language as seems to agree with his second coming; and, perhaps, both are included, with various things between the one and the other; or it respects the kingdom of Christ, from his first to his second coming; to which agrees the inscription of the Syriac version, which is

``a Psalm of David, in which he prophesies concerning the coming of the Messiah, and again he intimates in it his last appearance.''
