Then 1Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, Solomon'sservant, whose mother'sname was Zeruah, a widow, 2also arebelled against the king.
Now this was the reasonwhy he brebelled against the king : 3Solomonbuilt the cMillo, and closed up the breach of the city of his fatherDavid.
Now the manJeroboam was a valiantwarrior, and when 4Solomonsaw that the youngman was dindustrious, he appointed him over all the eforcedlabor of the house of Joseph.
It came about at that time, when Jeroboamwent out of Jerusalem, that 5the prophetAhijah the Shilonitefound him on the road. Now fAhijah had clothed himself with a newcloak ; and both of them were alone in the field.
Then 6Ahijahtookhold of the newcloakwhich was on him and tore it into twelvepieces.
He said to Jeroboam, "Take for yourself tenpieces ; for thussays the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Behold, 7I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and give you tentribes32
(8but he will haveonetribe, for the sake of My servantDavid and for the sake of Jerusalem, 9the citywhich I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel ),
33because they have forsaken Me, and 10have worshipedAshtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, 11Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the sons of Ammon ; and they have not walked in My ways, doingwhat is right in My sight and observing My statutes and My ordinances, as his fatherDavid did.
'Nevertheless I will not take the wholekingdom out of his hand, but I will make him grulerall the days of his life, for the sake of My servantDavidwhom I chose, whoobserved My commandments and My statutes ;
but 12I will take the kingdom from his son'shand and give it to you, even tentribes.
'But 13to his son I will giveonetribe, 14that My servantDavid may have a lampalwaysbefore Me in Jerusalem, 15the citywhere I have chosen for Myself to put My name.
'I will take you, and you shall reign over whateverhyou desire, and you shall be kingoverIsrael.
'Then it will be, that if you listen to all that I command you and walk in My ways, and dowhat is right in My sight by observing My statutes and My commandments, as My servantDaviddid, then 16I will be with you and 17build you an enduringhouse as I built for David, and I will giveIsrael to you.
'Thus I will afflict the idescendants of David for this, but not always .' "
40Solomonsought therefore to putJeroboam to death ; but Jeroboamarose and fled to Egypt to 18Shishakking of Egypt, and he was in Egyptuntil the death of Solomon.
