Then the kingaorderedAshpenaz, the chief of his bofficials, to bring in some of the sons of Israel, including some of the croyal1family and of the nobles,
4youths in whom was 2nodefect, who were good-looking , showing3intelligence in every branch of wisdom, endowed with understanding and discerningknowledge, and who had ability for dserving in the king'secourt ; and he ordered him to teach them the fliterature and 4language of the 5Chaldeans.

The kingappointed for them a dailyration from the 6king'schoicefood and from the winewhich he drank, and appointed that they should be geducatedthreeyears, at the end of which they were to h7enter the king'spersonalservice .

Now among them from the sons of Judah were 8Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.

Then the commander of the officialsassigned new names to them; and to Daniel he assigned the name 9Belteshazzar, to Hananiah10Shadrach, to Mishael11Meshach and to Azariah12Abed-nego.
