What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions1 until the Seed2 to whom the promise referred had come. The law was put into effect through angels3 by a mediator.420
A mediator,5 however, does not represent just one party; but God is one.
Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not!6 For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law.722
But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin,8 so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.
Before this faith came, we were held prisoners9 by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed.1024
So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christa11 that we might be justified by faith.1225
Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.13
You are all sons of God14 through faith in Christ Jesus,
for all of you who were baptized into Christ15 have clothed yourselves with Christ.1628
There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free,17 male nor female,18 for you are all one in Christ Jesus.1929
If you belong to Christ,20 then you are Abraham's seed,21 and heirs22 according to the promise.23
