He had a dream1 in which he saw a stairwaya resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.213
There above itb stood the LORD,3 and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.4 I will give you and your descendants the land5 on which you are lying.614
Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you7 will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south.8 All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.915
I am with you10 and will watch over you1112 wherever you go,13 and I will bring you back to this land.14 I will not leave you15 until I have done what I have promised you.16"1716
When Jacob awoke from his sleep,18 he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it."
He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place!19 This is none other than the house of God;20 this is the gate of heaven."
Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head21 and set it up as a pillar22 and poured oil on top of it.2319
He called that place Bethel,c24 though the city used to be called Luz.2520
Then Jacob made a vow,26 saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me27 on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear2821
so that I return safely29 to my father's house,30 then the LORD d will be my God3122
ande this stone that I have set up as a pillar32 will be God's house,33 and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.34"
