5Woe to 1Assyria, the 2rod of My anger And the staff in whose hands is 3My indignation,
I send it against a 4godlessnation And commission it against the 5people of My fury To capturebooty and 6to seizeplunder, And to atrample them down like 7mud in the streets.
Yet it 8does not sointend, Nor does bit planso in its heart, But rather it is cits purpose to destroy And to cutoffdmanynations.
For it says, "Are not my princeseallkings?
"Is not 9Calno like 10Carchemish, Or11Hamath like Arpad, Or12Samaria like 13Damascus?
"As my hand has reached to the 14kingdoms of the idols, Whose gravenimages were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
Shall I not fdo to Jerusalem and her imagesJust as I have done to Samaria and 15her idols?"
So it will be that when the Lord has completedall His 16work on MountZion and on Jerusalem, He will say, "I will gpunish the fruit of the arrogantheart of the king of Assyria and 17the pomp of hhis haughtiness."
For 18he has said, "By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this, For I haveunderstanding; And I 19removed the boundaries of the peoples And plundered their treasures, And like a mightyman I broughtdownitheir inhabitants,
And my handreached to the riches of the peoples like a 20nest, And as one gathersabandonedeggs, I gatheredall the earth; And there was not one that flapped its wing or opened its beak or chirped."
Is the 21axe to 22boast itself over the one who chops with it? Is the saw to exalt itself over the one who wields it? That would be like 23a jclubwielding those who lift it, Or like 24a rodlifting him who is not wood.
16Therefore the Lord, the kGOD of hosts, will send a 25wastingdisease among his 26stoutwarriors; And under his 27glory a fire will be kindled like a burningflame.
And the 28light of Israel will become a fire and his 29HolyOne a flame, And it will 30burn and devour his thorns and his briars in a singleday.
And He will 31destroy the glory of his forest and of his fruitfulgarden, bothsoul and body, And it will be as when a sickmanwastesaway.
And the 32rest of the trees of his forest will be so small in number That a child could write them down.
Now in that day the 33remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob34who have escaped, will neveragainrely on the one who struck them, but will truly35rely on the LORD, the HolyOne of Israel.
A 36remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the 37mightyGod.
For 38though your people, O Israel, may be like the sand of the sea, Only a remnant within them will return; A 39destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.
For a completedestruction, one that is decreed, 40the LordlGOD of hosts will execute in the midst of the wholeland.
24Thereforethussays the LordmGOD of hosts, "O My people who dwell in 41Zion, 42do not fear the Assyriannwho 43strikes you with the rod and lifts up his staffagainst you, the wayEgypt did.
"For in a very44littlewhile45My indignation against you will be spent and My anger will be directed to their destruction."
The LORD of hosts will 46arouse a scourgeagainst him like the slaughter of 47Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His 48staff will be over the sea and He will lift it up 49the way He did in Egypt.
So it will be in that day, that ohis 50burden will be removed from your shoulders and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be brokenbecause51of fatness.
He has comeagainstAiath, He has passed through 52Migron; At 53Michmash he deposited his 54baggage.
They have gonethrough55the pass, saying, "56Geba will be our lodgingplace." 57Ramah is terrified, and 58Gibeah of Saul has fled away.
30Cryaloud with your voice, O daughter of 59Gallim! Payattention, Laishah and pwretched60Anathoth!
31Madmenah has fled. The inhabitants of Gebim have soughtrefuge.
32Yettoday he will halt at 61Nob; He 62shakes his fist at the mountain of the q63daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
33Behold, the Lord, the rGOD of hosts, will lopoff the boughs with a terriblecrash; Those also who are 64tall in stature will be cutdown And those who are lofty will be abased.
He will cutdown the thickets of the forest with an iron axe, And 65Lebanon will fallsby the MightyOne.
