121So2the Roman acohort and the bcommander and the 3officers of the Jews, arrestedJesus and bound Him,
and led Him to 4Annasfirst; for he was father-in-law of 5Caiaphas, who was highpriest that year.
14NowCaiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that 6it was expedient for oneman to die on behalf of the people.
157SimonPeter was followingJesus, and so was anotherdisciple. Now that disciple was known to the highpriest, and entered with Jesus into 8the court of the highpriest,
169but Peter was standing at the dooroutside. So the otherdisciple, who was known to the highpriest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and broughtPeter in.
1710Then the slave-girl who kept the doorsaid to Peter, "11You are not also one of thisman'sdisciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."
18Now the slaves and the 12officers were standing there, having made13a charcoalfire, for it was cold and they were 14warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
1915The highpriestthenquestionedJesusabout His disciples, and about His teaching.
20Jesusanswered him, "I 16have spokenopenly to the world; I always17taught in csynagogues and 18in the temple, whereall the Jewscometogether; and I spokenothing in secret.21"Why do you question Me? Questionthose who have heardwhat I spoke to them; they knowwhat I said."22
When He had saidthis, one of the 19officersstandingnearby20struckJesus, saying, "Is that the way You answer the highpriest?"
2321Jesusanswered him, "If I have spokenwrongly, testify of the wrong; but ifrightly, why do you strike Me?"2422SoAnnassent Him bound to 23Caiaphas the highpriest.
2524Now25SimonPeter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, "26You are not also one of His disciples, are you?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."
26One of the slaves of the highpriest, being a relative of the one 27whoseearPetercutoff, said, "Did I not see you in 28the garden with Him?"
27Peterthendenied it again, and immediately29a roostercrowed.
2830Then they ledJesus from 31Caiaphas into 32the dPraetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into 33the ePraetoriumso that 34they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
2935ThereforePilatewent out to them and said, "Whataccusation do you bring against thisMan?"
They answered and said to him, "IfthisMan were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you."
31SoPilatesaid to them, "Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law." The Jewssaid to him, "We are not permitted to putanyone to death,"
to fulfill36the word of Jesuswhich He spoke, signifying by whatkind of death He was about to die.
33ThereforePilate37enteredagain into the Praetorium, and summonedJesus and said to Him, "38Are You the King of the Jews?"
34Jesusanswered, "Are you sayingthisfon your owninitiative, or did otherstell you about Me?"35Pilateanswered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chiefpriestsdelivered You to me; what have You done?"
36Jesusanswered, "39My kingdomgis not of thisworld. If My kingdom were of thisworld, then My servants would be fightingso that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not hof thisrealm."37ThereforePilatesaid to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesusanswered, "40You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, 41to testify to the truth. 42Everyone who is of the truthhears My voice."38Pilatesaid to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had saidthis, he 43went out again to the Jews and said to them, "44 I findnoguilt in Him.
"45But you have a custom that I releasesomeoneifor you at the Passover; do you wishthen that I releasejfor you the King of the Jews?"
40So they cried out again, saying, "46Not thisMan, but Barabbas." NowBarabbas was a robber.
