Then the people of Ninevehbelieved in God; and they called a 1fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them.
When the wordreached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laidaside his robe from him, 2covered himself with sackcloth and sat on the aashes.
He issued a 3proclamation and it said, "In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flocktaste a thing. Do not let them eat or drinkwater.
"But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let bmen 4call on Godearnestly that each may 5turn from his wickedway and from the violencewhich is in chis hands.
"6Whoknows, God may turn and relent and withdraw His burninganger so that we will not perish."
