But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites,1 in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household,2 we will serve the LORD."316
Then the people answered, "Far be it from us to forsake4 the LORD to serve other gods!
It was the LORD our God himself who brought us and our fathers up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery,5 and performed those great signs6 before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.
And the LORD drove out7 before us all the nations,8 including the Amorites, who lived in the land.9 We too will serve the LORD, because he is our God.10"
Joshua said to the people, "You are not able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God;11 he is a jealous God.12 He will not forgive13 your rebellion14 and your sins.
If you forsake the LORD15 and serve foreign gods, he will turn16 and bring disaster17 on you and make an end of you,18 after he has been good to you."
But the people said to Joshua, "No! We will serve the LORD."
Then Joshua said, "You are witnesses19 against yourselves that you have chosen20 to serve the LORD." "Yes, we are witnesses,21" they replied.
"Now then," said Joshua, "throw away the foreign gods22 that are among you and yield your hearts23 to the LORD, the God of Israel."
And the people said to Joshua, "We will serve the LORD our God and obey him."24
