"Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which I am teaching you to perform, so that you may live and go in and take possession of the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.
"Has any people heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, as you have heard it, and survived ?
that a manslayer might flee there, who unintentionally slew his neighbor without having enmity toward him in time past ; and by fleeing to one of these cities he might live :
"You said, 'Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire ; we have seen today that God speaks with man, yet he lives.
'For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived ?
"You shall walk in all the way which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess.
"So the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God for our good always and for our survival, as it is today.
"The LORD your God will clear away these nations before you little by little ; you will not be able to put an end to them quickly, for the wild beasts would grow too numerous for you.
"All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to give to your forefathers.
"He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.
"Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue, that you may live and possess the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
"Now this is the case of the manslayer who may flee there and live : when he kills his friend unintentionally , not hating him previously -
as when a man goes into the forest with his friend to cut wood, and his hand swings the axe to cut down the tree, and the iron head slips off the handle and strikes his friend so that he dies -he may flee to one of these cities and live ;
"Only in the cities of these peoples that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you shall not leave alive anything that breathes.
in that I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply, and that the LORD your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it.
"I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,
'See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded and it is I who heal, And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
"May Reuben live and not die, Nor his men be few."
