and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of the Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the millstones ; all the firstborn of the cattle as well.
Now it came about at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of cattle.
"The peoples have heard, they tremble ; Anguish has gripped the inhabitants of Philistia.
"Then the chiefs of Edom were dismayed ; The leaders of Moab, trembling grips them; All the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away.
The sons of Israel said to them, "Would that we had died by the LORD'S hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full ; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger."
But Moses' hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set.
It came about the next day that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood about Moses from the morning until the evening.
Now when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, "What is this thing that you are doing for the people ? Why do you alone sit as judge and all the people stand about you from morning until evening ?"
"I will fix your boundary from the Red Sea to the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness to the River Euphrates; for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you will drive them out before you.
otherwise you might make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land and they would play the harlot with their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone might invite you to eat of his sacrifice,
