Deuteronomy 6:22 Meaning and Commentary

Deuteronomy 6:22

And the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and sore
Meaning the ten plagues, which were signs of the power of God, marvellous works, great, above the power of nature, and very sore or "evil" F25; very distressing to the Egyptians; for they came and lay heavy

upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes;
upon the king, his courtiers, and the whole land, and which were done publicly in the sight of the people of Israel, as well as the Egyptians; and there were some then living, though at that time when wrought under twenty years, who saw with their own eyes what were done to them, and could never forget them. Here also the Targum of Jonathan has it,

``and the Word of the Lord sent signs, &c''

Deuteronomy 6:22 In-Context

20 In the future, your children will ask you, "What is the meaning of the laws, the regulations, and the case laws that the LORD our God commanded you?"
21 tell them: We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt. But the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
22 Before our own eyes, the LORD performed great and awesome deeds of power against Egypt, Pharaoh, and his entire dynasty.
23 But the Lord brought us out from there so that he could bring us in, giving us the land that he swore to our ancestors.
24 Then the LORD commanded us to perform all these regulations, revering the LORD our God, so that things go well for us always and so we continue to live, as we're doing right now.
