John 5:46

46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, because Moses wrote about me.

John 5:46 Meaning and Commentary

John 5:46

For had ye believed Moses
The doctrine of Moses, and what he says in his writings:

ye would have believed me;
for there is an agreement between Moses and Christ; Christ is the end of the law of Moses, and in him is the accomplishment of his writings:

for he wrote of me;
in the books written by him, Christ is spoken of, as the seed of the woman, that should bruise the serpent's head; as the seed of Abraham, in whom all nations of the earth should be blessed; as the Shiloh, to whom the gathering of the people should be; and as that prophet, who should be like unto himself, to whom the people of Israel should hearken; and he wrote many things typically of Christ; and indeed, the whole Mosaic economy was typical of Christ, as the epistle to the Hebrews shows: and therefore disbelieving Christ, was disbelieving Moses; who therefore would be an accuser of them, and a witness against them.

John 5:46 In-Context

44 How can you believe when you receive praise from each other but don't seek the praise that comes from the only God?
45 "Don't think that I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, the one in whom your hope rests.
46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, because Moses wrote about me.
47 If you don't believe the writings of Moses, how will you believe my words?"
