Psalms 105:36 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 105:36

He smote also all the firstborn in their land
Both of men and beasts; the firstborn of the king on the throne, and of the maidservant behind the mill, and of the captive in the dungeon; this was the last plague, and which prevailed upon the Egyptians to let Israel go, ( Exodus 11:5 ) ( 12:29-33 ) .

The chief of all their strength;
or the first of their strength; the same in different words as before, their firstborn; see ( Genesis 49:3 ) .

Psalms 105:36 In-Context

34 God spoke, and the locusts came— countless grasshoppers came!
35 They devoured all the plants in their land; they devoured the fruit of their soil.
36 God struck down all the oldest sons throughout their land; struck down their very pride and joy.
37 Then God brought Israel out, filled with silver and gold; not one of its tribes stumbled.
38 Egypt celebrated when they left, because the dread of Israel had come upon them.
