Marvel not (mh qaumash). "Do not begin to wonder" (ingressive first aorist active subjunctive with mh), as clearly Nicodemus had done. In John the word qaumazw usually means "unintelligent wonder" (Bernard). Ye must be born anew (dei uma gennhqhnai anwqen). Jesus repeats the point in verse Luke 3 (dei and the infinitive instead of ean mh and the subjunctive) with anwqen (from above) only and not ex udato.
