Haggai 2:1 Meaning and Commentary

Haggai 2:1

In the seventh [month]
The month Tisri, which answers to part of September and part of October: in the one and twentieth [day] of the month;
being a month, wanting three days, from the time the Jews came and worked in the house of the Lord, ( Haggai 1:14 Haggai 1:15 ) it was toward the close of the feast of tabernacles: see ( Leviticus 23:34 ) : came the word of the Lord by the Prophet Haggai;
the word of prophecy, as the Targum: this was from the Lord, not from the prophet himself; he was only the messenger sent with it to deliver it: saying;
to him the prophet, giving him orders as follow:

Haggai 2:1 In-Context

1 On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the Lord came through Haggai the prophet:
2 "Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and to the remnant of the people:
3 Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn't it seem like nothing to you?
4 Even so, be strong, Zerubbabel"-the Lord's declaration. "Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land"-the Lord's declaration. "Work! For I am with you"-the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.
5 "[This is] the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt, and My Spirit is present among you; don't be afraid."
