In the fortieth year,1 on the first day of the eleventh month,2 Moses proclaimed3 to the Israelites all that the LORD had commanded him concerning them.
This was after he had defeated Sihon4 king of the Amorites,5 who reigned in Heshbon,6 and at Edrei had defeated Og7 king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.85
East of the Jordan in the territory of Moab,9 Moses began to expound this law, saying:
The LORD our God said to us10 at Horeb,11 "You have stayed long enough12 at this mountain.
Break camp and advance into the hill country of the Amorites;13 go to all the neighboring peoples in the Arabah,14 in the mountains, in the western foothills, in the Negev15 and along the coast, to the land of the Canaanites16 and to Lebanon,17 as far as the great river, the Euphrates.188
See, I have given you this land19.20 Go in and take possession of the land that the LORD swore21 he would give to your fathers--to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob--and to their descendants after them."
At that time I said to you, "You are too heavy a burden22 for me to carry alone.2310
The LORD your God has increased24 your numbers25 so that today you are as many26 as the stars in the sky.2711
May the LORD, the God of your fathers, increase28 you a thousand times and bless you as he has promised!2912
But how can I bear your problems and your burdens and your disputes all by myself ?3013
Choose some wise, understanding and respected men31 from each of your tribes, and I will set them over you."
