He came as a 1witness, to bear witness about the light, 2that all might believe through him.
3He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
4The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet 5the world did not know him.
He came to 6his own, and 7his own people8 did not receive him.
But to all who did receive him, 9who believed in his name, 10he gave the right 11to become 12children of God,
who 13were born, 14not of blood 15nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
And 16the Word 17became flesh and 18dwelt among us, 19and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of 20grace and 21truth.
(22John bore witness about him, and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, 23'He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.'")
And from 24his fullness we have all received, 25grace upon grace.
For 26the law was given through Moses; 27grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
