Judges 2:14 Meaning and Commentary

Judges 2:14

And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel
For the idolatries they were guilty of; it burned within him, it broke forth, and was poured out like fire on them, and consumed them; see ( Nahum 1:6 ) ;

and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them;
that rifled their houses, and plundered them of their goods and substance:

and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about;
the is, delivered them into their hands, who carried them captive, where they were as men sold for slaves; see ( Psalms 44:12 ) ; and this was in just retaliation, that as they had said themselves to work wickedness, the Lord sold them into the hands of their enemies for their wickedness; and, as they had followed the gods of the people round about them, so he delivered them up, into the hands of their enemies round about them, as the Mesopotamians, Moabites, Midianites, Philistines, and Ammonites:

so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies;
but turned their backs on them, and fled whenever engaged in war with them.

Judges 2:14 In-Context

12 And they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked the LORD to anger.
13 They abandoned the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth.
14 So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies.
15 Whenever they marched out, the hand of the LORD was against them for harm, as the LORD had warned, and as the LORD had sworn to them. And they were in terrible distress.
16 Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them.
