2"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For 3you clean the outside of 4the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of 5greed and self-indulgence.

You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of 6the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

7"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like 8whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and 9all uncleanness.

So you also 10outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of 11hypocrisy and lawlessness.

12"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

saying, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'

Thus you witness against yourselves that you are 13sons of those who murdered the prophets.

You serpents, 15you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to 16hell?

17Therefore 18I send you 19prophets and wise men and 20scribes, 21some of whom you will kill and crucify, and 22some you will 23flog in your synagogues and 24persecute from town to town,
