Nehemiah 9:6-16

6 [a]1"You are the LORD, you alone. 2You have made heaven, 3the heaven of heavens, 4with all their host, 5the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; 6and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.
7 You are the LORD, the God 7who chose Abram and brought him out of 8Ur of the Chaldeans 9and gave him the name Abraham.
8 10You found his heart faithful before you, 11and made with him the covenant to give to his offspring 12the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite. 13And you have kept your promise, for you are righteous.
9 14"And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and heard 15their cry at the Red Sea,
10 16and performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land, for you knew that 17they acted arrogantly against our fathers. And 18you made a name for yourself, as it is to this day.
11 19And you divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on dry land, and you cast their pursuers into the depths, 20as a stone into mighty waters.
12 By 21a pillar of cloud you led them in the day, and by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go.
13 22You came down on Mount Sinai 23and spoke with them from heaven and gave them 24right rules and true laws, good statutes and commandments,
14 25and you made known to them your holy Sabbath and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses your servant.
15 26You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger and 27brought water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and you 28told them to go in to possess the land that you had sworn to give them.
16 "But they and our fathers 29acted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments.

Nehemiah 9:6-16 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO NEHEMIAH 9

In this chapter we have an account of a fast kept by the Jews, which was observed, as by outward acts of humiliation, so by confession of sin, reading the law, and worshipping the Lord, Ne 9:1-3 and of a long prayer that the Levites made, in which they celebrate the divine perfections, take notice of various instances of the goodness of God to the people of Israel, acknowledge their manifold transgressions, observe the Lord's correction of them for them, in which they own he was righteous, Ne 9:4-38.
