Psalms 31:11-21

11 Because of all my adversaries I have become 1a reproach, especially to my 2neighbors, and an object of dread to my acquaintances; those who see me in the street 3flee from me.
12 I have been 4forgotten like one who is dead; I have become like 5a broken vessel.
13 For I 6hear the whispering of many-- terror on every side!-- 7as they scheme together against me, as they plot to take my life.
14 But I 8trust in you, O LORD; I say, "You are my God."
15 My 9times are in your hand; 10rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!
16 11Make your face shine on your servant; save me in your steadfast love!
17 O LORD, 12let me not be put to shame, for I call upon you; let the wicked be put to shame; let them go 13silently to Sheol.
18 Let the lying lips be mute, which 14speak 15insolently against the righteous in pride and contempt.
19 Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, 16in the sight of the children of mankind!
20 In 17the cover of your presence you hide them from the plots of men; you 18store them in your shelter from the strife of tongues.
21 Blessed be the LORD, for he has wondrously 19shown his steadfast love to me when I was in 20a besieged city.

Psalms 31:11-21 Meaning and Commentary

To the chief Musician, a Psalm of David. This psalm, according to Arama, was composed by David when in Keilah; but, according to Kimchi and others, when the Ziphites proposed to deliver him up into the hands of Saul; and who, upon their solicitations, came down and surrounded him with his army, from whom in haste he made his escape, and to which he is thought to refer in Psalm 31:22. Theodoret supposes it was written by David when he fled from Absalom, and that it has some respect in it to his sin against Uriah, in that verse.
