Psalms 62:1-10

1 For God alone 1my soul 2waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.
2 3He only is my rock and my salvation, my 4fortress; 5I shall not be greatly shaken.
3 How long will all of you attack a man to batter him, like 6a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
4 They only plan to thrust him down from his 7high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. 8They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. Selah
5 For God alone, O 9my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.
6 10He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God rests my 11salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, 12my refuge is God.
8 13Trust in him at all times, O people; 14pour out your heart before him; God is 15a refuge for us. Selah
9 16Those of low estate are but a breath; those of high estate 17are a delusion; in the balances they go up; 18they are together lighter than a breath.
10 Put no trust in extortion; 19set no vain hopes on robbery; 20if riches increase, set not your heart on them.

Psalms 62:1-10 Meaning and Commentary

To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, [A Psalm] of David. Concerning "Jeduthun," See Gill on "Ps 39:1," title. Kimchi thinks this psalm was written concerning the captivity; and Jarchi twtdh le, concerning the decrees and judgments made against Israel by their enemies; and so some of their ancient expositions {d}; but it seems to have been composed by David when in distress, either through Saul and his courtiers, or by reason of the conspiracy of Absalom. Theodoret takes it to be a prophecy of the persecution of Antiochus in the times of the Maccabees.

{d} Vid. Yalkut Simeoni in loc.
