Jeremiah 25:19 Meaning and Commentary

Jeremiah 25:19

Pharaoh king of Egypt
Who is mentioned first after the kings of Judah; not only because the Jews were in alliance with Egypt, and trusted to them; and therefore this is observed, to show the vanity of their confidence and dependence; but because the judgments of God first took place on the king of Egypt; for in this very year, in which this prophecy was delivered, Pharaohnecho king of Egypt was smitten by Nebuchadnezzar, ( Jeremiah 46:2 ) ; though the prophecy had a further accomplishment in Pharaohhophra, who was given into the hands of his enemies, as foretold, ( Jeremiah 44:30 ) ; and his servants, and his princes, and all his people;
his menial servants, his domestics, and his nobles and peers of the realm, and all his subjects. It expresses an utter destruction of the kingdom of Egypt; and the particulars of it may be the rather given, to show the vain trust of the Jews in that people.

Jeremiah 25:19 In-Context

17 So I took the cup from the LORD's hand. I made all the nations to whom the LORD sent me drink from it:
18 Jerusalem and the cities of Judah as well as its kings and officials. When they drank from it, they became wastelands and ruins, something ridiculed and cursed, until today.
19 [I also made these people drink from it:] Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, officials, all his people,
20 and all the foreign people living among them; all the kings of the land of Uz; all the kings of Philistia, those from the cities of Ashkelon, Gaza, and Ekron, and the people left in Ashdod;
21 Edom, Moab, and the people of Ammon;
