Joshua 19:48 Meaning and Commentary

Joshua 19:48

This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of
Dan
Before described by its cities, which were in it. This tribe was bounded by Ephraim on the north, by Judah on the east, by Simeon on the south, and by the Mediterranean sea on the west. Josephus F8 says, the Danites enjoyed the vale which lies to the setting sun, bounded by Azotus and Doris, and all Jamnia and Getta, from Accaron (or Ekron) to the mountain from whence the tribe of Judah begins:

according to their families;
which inheritance was distributed according to the number of their families:

their cities with their villages;
before named.

Joshua 19:48 In-Context

46 Me Jarkon, and Rakkon, with the border passing in front of Joppa.
47 The border of Dan extended beyond them. Dan's descendants went up and attacked Leshem, captured it, and killed everyone there. They took it, settled there, and renamed the city Dan after their ancestor Dan.
48 These cities with their villages are the inheritance for the families of the tribe of Dan.
49 When they all had finally received the land they were to inherit, the people of Israel also gave land within their territory as an inheritance to Joshua, son of Nun.
50 They gave him the city he asked for, as the LORD had instructed them to do. It was Timnath Serah in the mountains of Ephraim. He rebuilt the city and lived there.
