Jeremiah 25:32 Meaning and Commentary

Jeremiah 25:32

Thus saith the Lord of hosts, behold, evil shall go forth
from nation to nation
Begin in one nation, and then go on to another; first in Judea, and then in Egypt; and so on, like a catching distemper, or like fire that first consumes one house, and then another; and thus shall the cup go round from nation to nation, before prophesied of: thus, beginning at Judea, one nation after another was destroyed by the king of Babylon; then he and his monarchy were destroyed by the Medes and Persians; and then they by the Macedonians; and then the Greeks by the Romans; and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth;
or "from the sides of [it]" F20; that is, "from the ends of [it]"; as the Targum, which paraphrases it,

``and many people shall come openly from the ends of the earth;''
this was first verified in the Chaldean army under Nebuchadnezzar, compared to a whirlwind, ( Jeremiah 4:13 ) ; and then in the Medes and Persians under Cyrus; and after that in the Greeks under Alexander; the great and last of all in the Romans under Titus Vespasian.

Jeremiah 25:32 In-Context

30 Therefore prophesy you against them all these words, and tell them, the LORD will roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he will mightily roar against his fold; he will give a shout, as those who tread [the grapes], against all the inhabitants of the eretz.
31 A noise shall come even to the end of the eretz; for the LORD has a controversy with the nations; he will enter into judgment with all flesh: as for the wicked, he will give them to the sword, says the LORD.
32 Thus says the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great tempest shall be raised up from the uttermost parts of the eretz.
33 The slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the eretz even to the other end of the eretz: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung on the surface of the ground.
34 Wail, you shepherds, and cry; and wallow [in ashes], you principal of the flock; for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are fully come, and you shall fall like a goodly vessel.
