shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?1' "
When the Lord has finished all his work2 against Mount Zion3 and Jerusalem, he will say, "I will punish the king of Assyria4 for the willful pride5 of his heart and the haughty look6 in his eyes.
For he says: " 'By the strength of my hand7 I have done this,8 and by my wisdom, because I have understanding. I removed the boundaries of nations, I plundered their treasures;9 like a mighty one I subdueda their kings.1014
As one reaches into a nest,11 so my hand reached for the wealth12 of the nations; as men gather abandoned eggs, so I gathered all the countries;13 not one flapped a wing, or opened its mouth to chirp.14' "
Does the ax raise itself above him who swings it, or the saw boast against him who uses it?15 As if a rod were to wield him who lifts it up, or a club16 brandish him who is not wood!
Therefore, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, will send a wasting disease17 upon his sturdy warriors;18 under his pomp19 a fire20 will be kindled like a blazing flame.
The Light of Israel will become a fire,21 their Holy One22 a flame; in a single day it will burn and consume his thorns23 and his briers.2418
The splendor of his forests25 and fertile fields it will completely destroy,26 as when a sick man wastes away.
And the remaining trees of his forests27 will be so few28 that a child could write them down.
In that day29 the remnant of Israel, the survivors30 of the house of Jacob, will no longer rely31 on him who struck them down32 but will truly rely33 on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.3421
A remnant35 will return,b36 a remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God.37
