When the Lord has finished all his work1 against Mount Zion2 and Jerusalem, he will say, "I will punish the king of Assyria3 for the willful pride4 of his heart and the haughty look5 in his eyes.
For he says: " 'By the strength of my hand6 I have done this,7 and by my wisdom, because I have understanding. I removed the boundaries of nations, I plundered their treasures;8 like a mighty one I subdueda their kings.914
As one reaches into a nest,10 so my hand reached for the wealth11 of the nations; as men gather abandoned eggs, so I gathered all the countries;12 not one flapped a wing, or opened its mouth to chirp.13' "
Does the ax raise itself above him who swings it, or the saw boast against him who uses it?14 As if a rod were to wield him who lifts it up, or a club15 brandish him who is not wood!
Therefore, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, will send a wasting disease16 upon his sturdy warriors;17 under his pomp18 a fire19 will be kindled like a blazing flame.
The Light of Israel will become a fire,20 their Holy One21 a flame; in a single day it will burn and consume his thorns22 and his briers.2318
The splendor of his forests24 and fertile fields it will completely destroy,25 as when a sick man wastes away.
And the remaining trees of his forests26 will be so few27 that a child could write them down.
In that day28 the remnant of Israel, the survivors29 of the house of Jacob, will no longer rely30 on him who struck them down31 but will truly rely32 on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.3321
A remnant34 will return,b35 a remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God.3622
Though your people, O Israel, be like the sand37 by the sea, only a remnant will return.38 Destruction has been decreed,39 overwhelming and righteous.
