A Prophecy Against Babylon

1 An oracle1 concerning Babylon2 that Isaiah son of Amoz3 saw:4 2 Raise a banner5 on a bare hilltop, shout to them; beckon to them to enter the gates6 of the nobles. 3 I have commanded my holy ones; I have summoned my warriors7 to carry out my wrath8-- those who rejoice9 in my triumph. 4 Listen, a noise on the mountains, like that of a great multitude!10 Listen, an uproar11 among the kingdoms, like nations massing together! The LORD Almighty12 is mustering13 an army for war. 5 They come from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens14-- the LORD and the weapons15 of his wrath16-- to destroy17 the whole country. 6 Wail,18 for the day19 of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction20 from the Almighty.a21 7 Because of this, all hands will go limp,22 every man's heart will melt.23 8 Terror24 will seize them, pain and anguish will grip25 them; they will writhe like a woman in labor.26 They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame.27 9 See, the day28 of the LORD is coming --a cruel29 day, with wrath30 and fierce anger31-- to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it. 10 The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light.32 The rising sun33 will be darkened34 and the moon will not give its light.35
