How you have fallen1 from heaven, O morning star,2 son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!313
You said in your heart, "I will ascend4 to heaven; I will raise my throne5 above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,6 on the utmost heights7 of the sacred mountain.a14
I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;8 I will make myself like the Most High."915
But you are brought down10 to the grave,11 to the depths12 of the pit.1316
Those who see you stare at you, they ponder your fate:14 "Is this the man who shook15 the earth and made kingdoms tremble,
the man who made the world a desert,16 who overthrew17 its cities and would not let his captives go home?"1818
All the kings of the nations lie in state, each in his own tomb.1919
But you are cast out20 of your tomb like a rejected branch; you are covered with the slain,21 with those pierced by the sword,22 those who descend to the stones of the pit.23 Like a corpse trampled underfoot,
you will not join them in burial,24 for you have destroyed your land and killed your people. The offspring25 of the wicked26 will never be mentioned27 again.
Prepare a place to slaughter his sons28 for the sins of their forefathers;29 they are not to rise to inherit the land and cover the earth with their cities.
"I will rise up30 against them," declares the LORD Almighty. "I will cut off from Babylon her name31 and survivors, her offspring and descendants,32" declares the LORD.
