The people walking in darkness1 have seen a great light;2 on those living in the land of the shadow of deatha3 a light has dawned.43
You have enlarged the nation5 and increased their joy;6 they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder.74
For as in the day of Midian's defeat,8 you have shattered9 the yoke10 that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders,11 the rod of their oppressor.125
Every warrior's boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning,13 will be fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,14 to us a son is given,15 and the government16 will be on his shoulders.17 And he will be called Wonderful Counselor,b18 Mighty God,19 Everlasting20 Father,21 Prince of Peace.227
Of the increase of his government23 and peace24 there will be no end.25 He will reign26 on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice27 and righteousness28 from that time on and forever.29 The zeal30 of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
The Lord has sent a message31 against Jacob; it will fall on Israel.
All the people will know it-- Ephraim32 and the inhabitants of Samaria33-- who say with pride and arrogance34 of heart,
"The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone;35 the fig36 trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.37"
But the LORD has strengthened Rezin's38 foes against them and has spurred their enemies on.
Arameans39 from the east and Philistines40 from the west have devoured41 Israel with open mouth. Yet for all this, his anger42 is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.43
