1 Y Joram hijo de Acab comenzó a reinar en Samaria sobre Israel el año dieciocho de Josafat rey de Judá; y reinó doce años

2 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR, aunque no como su padre y su madre; porque quitó las estatuas de Baal que su padre había hecho

3 Mas se dio a los pecados de Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat, que hizo pecar a Israel; y no se apartó de ellos

4 Entonces Mesa rey de Moab era pastor, y pagaba al rey de Israel cien mil corderos y cien mil carneros con sus vellones

5 Mas muerto Acab, el rey de Moab se rebeló contra el rey de Israel

6 Y salió entonces de Samaria el rey Joram, y reconoció a todo Israel

7 Y fue y envió a decir a Josafat rey de Judá: El rey de Moab se ha rebelado contra mí; ¿irás tú conmigo a la guerra contra Moab? Y él respondió: Iré, porque como yo, así tú; como mi pueblo, así tu pueblo; como mis caballos, así también tus caballos

8 Y dijo: ¿Por qué camino iremos? Y él respondió: Por el camino del desierto de Idumea

9 Partieron, pues, el rey de Israel, el rey de Judá, y el rey de Idumea; y como anduvieron rodeando por el desierto siete días de camino, les faltó agua para el ejército, y para las bestias que los seguían

10 Entonces el rey de Israel dijo: ¡Ay! que ha llamado el SEÑOR estos tres reyes para entregarlos en manos de los moabitas

11 Mas Josafat dijo: ¿No hay aquí profeta del SEÑOR, para que consultemos al SEÑOR por él? Y uno de los siervos del rey de Israel respondió y dijo: Aquí está Eliseo hijo de Safat, quien derramaba agua sobre las manos de Elías

12 Y Josafat dijo: Este tendrá palabra del SEÑOR. Y descendieron a él el rey de Israel, Josafat, y el rey de Idumea

13 Entonces Eliseo dijo al rey de Israel: ¿Qué tengo yo contigo? Ve a los profetas de tu padre, y a los profetas de tu madre. Y el rey de Israel le respondió: No; porque ha juntado el SEÑOR estos tres reyes para entregarlos en manos de los moabitas

14 Y Eliseo dijo: Vive el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, en cuya presencia estoy, que si no tuviera respeto al rostro de Josafat rey de Judá, no te miraría a ti, ni te vería

15 Mas ahora traedme un tañedor. Y mientras el tañedor tocaba, la mano del SEÑOR vino sobre él

16 y dijo: Así dijo el SEÑOR: Haced en este valle muchas acequias

17 Porque el SEÑOR ha dicho así: No veréis viento, ni veréis lluvia, y este valle será lleno de agua, y beberéis vosotros, y vuestras bestias, y vuestros ganados

18 Y esto es cosa ligera ante los ojos del SEÑOR; dará también a los moabitas en vuestras manos

19 Y heriréis a toda ciudad fortalecida y a toda villa escogida, y talaréis todo buen árbol, y cegaréis todas las fuentes de aguas, y destruiréis con piedras toda tierra fértil

20 Y aconteció que por la mañana, cuando se ofrece el presente, he aquí vinieron aguas por el camino de Idumea, y la tierra fue llena de aguas

21 Y todos los de Moab, cuando oyeron que los reyes subían a pelear contra ellos, se juntaron desde todos los que ceñían talabarte arriba, y se pusieron en la frontera

22 Y cuando se levantaron por la mañana, y el sol salió sobre las aguas, vieron los de Moab delante de ellos las aguas bermejas como sangre

23 y dijeron: ¡Esto es sangre! Los reyes se han revuelto, y cada uno ha dado muerte a su compañero. Ahora pues, ¡Moab, a la presa

24 Mas cuando llegaron al campamento de Israel, se levantaron los israelitas e hirieron a los de Moab, los cuales huyeron delante de ellos; y los hirieron de nuevo; y siguieron empero hiriendo todavía a los de Moab

25 Y asolaron las ciudades, y en todas las heredades fértiles echó cada uno su piedra, y las llenaron; taparon también todas las fuentes de las aguas, y derribaron todos los buenos árboles; hasta que en Kir-hareset solamente dejaron sus piedras; porque los honderos la cercaron, y la hirieron

26 Y cuando el rey de Moab vio que la batalla lo vencía, tomó consigo setecientos varones que sacaban espada, para romper contra el rey de Idumea; mas no pudieron

27 Entonces arrebató a su primogénito que había de reinar en su lugar, y lo sacrificó en holocausto sobre el muro. Y hubo grande enojo en Israel; y se retiraron de él, y se volvieron a su tierra

Chapter 3

Jehoram, king of Israel. (1-5) War with Moab, The intercession of Elisha. (6-19) Water supplied, Moab overcome. (20-27)

Verses 1-5 Jehoram took warning by God's judgment, and put away the image of Baal, yet he maintained the worship of the calves. Those do not truly repent or reform, who only part with the sins they lose by, but continue to love the sins that they think to gain by.

Verses 6-19 The king of Israel laments their distress, and the danger they were in. He called these kings together, yet he charges it upon Providence. Thus the foolishness of man perverteth his way, and then his heart fretteth against the Lord, ( Proverbs 19:3 ) . It was well that Jehoshaphat inquired of the Lord now, but it had been much better if he had done it before he engaged in this war. Good men sometimes neglect their duty, till necessity and affliction drive them to it. Wicked people often fare the better for the friendship and society of the godly. To try their faith and obedience, Elisha bids them make the valley full of pits to receive water. Those who expect God's blessings, must dig pools for the rain to fill, as in the valley of Baca, and thus make even that a well, ( Psalms 84:6 ) . We need not inquire whence the water came. God is not tied to second causes. They that sincerely seek for the dew of God's grace, shall have it, and by it be made more than conquerors.

Verses 20-27 It is a blessing to be favoured with the company of those who have power with God, and can prevail by their prayers. A kingdom may be upheld and prosper, in consequence of the fervent prayers of those who are dear to God. May we place our highest regard upon such as are most precious in his account. When sinners are saying Peace, peace, destruction comes upon them: despair will follow their mad presumption. In Satan's service and at his suggestion, such horrid deeds have been done, as cause the natural feelings of the heart to shudder; like the king of Moab's sacrificing his son. It is well not to urge the worst of men to extremities; we should rather leave them to the judgment of God.

This chapter gives the character of Jehoram king of Israel, 2Ki 3:1-3, relates the rebellion of the king of Moab against him, 2Ki 3:4,5, the war that he and his allies entered into on that account, 2Ki 3:6-9 the distress the combined army were in for want of water, their application upon this to Elisha, who promised them water, and they had it in a wonderful manner, 2Ki 3:10-20 and the chapter is concluded with the rout of the Moabites, and the barbarity of their king to his eldest son, 2Ki 3:21-27.
