2 Samuel 16

1 Y cuando David pasó un poco de la cumbre del monte, he aquí Siba, el criado de Mefi-boset, que lo salía a recibir con un par de asnos enalbardados, y sobre ellos doscientos panes, y cien hilos de pasas, y cien panes de higos secos, y un cuero de vino

2 Y dijo el rey a Siba: ¿Qué es esto? Y Siba respondió: Los asnos son para la familia del rey, en que suban; los panes y la pasa para que coman los criados, y el vino, para que beban los que se cansaren en el desierto

3 Y dijo el rey: ¿Dónde está el hijo de tu señor? Y Siba respondió al rey: He aquí él se ha quedado en Jerusalén, porque ha dicho: Hoy me devolverá la casa de Israel el reino de mi padre

4 Entonces el rey dijo a Siba: He aquí, sea tuyo todo lo que tiene Mefi-boset. Y respondió Siba inclinándose: Rey señor mío, halle yo gracia delante de ti

5 Y vino el rey David hasta Bahurim; y he aquí, salía uno de la familia de la casa de Saúl, el cual se llamaba Simei, hijo de Gera; y salía maldiciendo

6 y echando piedras contra David, y contra todos los siervos del rey David; y todo el pueblo, y todos los hombres valientes estaban a su diestra y a su siniestra

7 Y decía Simei, maldiciéndole: Sal, sal, varón sanguinario, y hombre de Belial

8 el SEÑOR te ha dado el pago de toda la sangre de la casa de Saúl, en lugar del cual tú has reinado; mas el SEÑOR ha entregado el reino en mano de tu hijo Absalón; y he aquí tú eres tomado en tu maldad, porque eres varón sanguinario

9 Entonces Abisai hijo de Sarvia, dijo al rey: ¿Por qué maldice este perro muerto a mi señor el rey? Yo te ruego que me dejes pasar, y le quitaré la cabeza

10 Y el rey respondió: ¿Qué tengo yo con vosotros, hijos de Sarvia? El maldice así, porque el SEÑOR le ha dicho que maldiga a David; ¿quién pues le dirá: Por qué lo haces así

11 Y dijo David a Abisai y a todos sus siervos: He aquí, mi hijo que ha salido de mis entrañas, acecha mi vida; ¿cuánto más ahora un hijo de Jemini? Dejadle que maldiga, que el SEÑOR se lo ha dicho

12 Por ventura el SEÑOR mirará mi aflicción, y me dará el SEÑOR bien por sus maldiciones de hoy

13 Y como David y los suyos iban por el camino, Simei iba por el lado del monte delante de él, andando y maldiciendo, y arrojando piedras delante de él, y esparciendo polvo

14 Y el rey y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, llegaron fatigados, y descansaron allí

15 Y Absalón y todo el pueblo, los varones de Israel, entraron en Jerusalén, y con él Ahitofel

16 Y aconteció que cuando Husai, el arquita, compañero especial de David llegó a Absalón, le dijo Husai: ¡Viva el rey, viva el rey

17 Y Absalón dijo a Husai: ¿Esta es tu misericordia para con tu amigo? ¿Por qué no fuiste con tu amigo

18 Y Husai respondió a Absalón: No; antes al que eligiere el SEÑOR y este pueblo y todos los varones de Israel, de aquel seré yo, y con aquel me quedaré

19 ¿Y a quién había yo de servir? ¿No es a su hijo? Como he servido delante de tu padre, así seré delante de ti

20 Entonces dijo Absalón a Ahitofel: Dadnos consejo sobre qué haremos

21 Y Ahitofel dijo a Absalón: Entra a las concubinas de tu padre, que él dejó para guardar la casa; y todo el pueblo de Israel oirá que te has hecho aborrecible a tu padre, y así se esforzarán las manos de todos los que están contigo

22 Entonces pusieron una tienda a Absalón sobre el terrado, y entró Absalón a las concubinas de su padre, en ojos de todo Israel

23 Y el consejo que daba Ahitofel en aquellos días, era como si consultaran la palabra de Dios. Tal era el consejo de Ahitofel, así con David como con Absalón

Chapter 16

Ziba's falsehood. (1-4) David cursed by Shimei. (5-14) Ahithophel's counsel. (15-23)

Verses 1-4 Ziba belied Mephibosheth. Great men ought always to be jealous of flatterers, and to be careful that they hear both sides.

Verses 5-14 David bore Shimei's curses much better than Ziba's flatteries; by these he was brought to pass a wrong judgment on another, by those to pass a right judgment on himself: the world's smiles are more dangerous than its frowns. Once and again David spared Saul's life, while Saul sought his. But innocence is no defence against malice and falsehood; nor are we to think it strange, if we are charged with that which we have been most careful to keep ourselves from. It is well for us, that men are not to be our judges, but He whose judgment is according to truth. See how patient David was under this abuse. Let this remind us of Christ, who prayed for those who reviled and crucified him. A humble spirit will turn reproaches into reproofs, and get good from them, instead of being provoked by them. David the hand of God in it, and comforts himself that God would bring good out of his affliction. We may depend upon God to repay, not only our services, but our sufferings.

Verses 15-23 The wisest counsellors of that age were Ahithophel and Hushai: Absalom thinks himself sure of success, when he has both; on them he relies, and consults not the ark, though he had that with him. But miserable counsellors were they both. Hushai would never counsel him to do wisely. Ahithophel counselled him to do wickedly; and so did as effectually betray him, as he did, who was designedly false to him: for they that advise men to sin, certainly advise them to their hurt. After all, honesty is the best policy, and will be found so in the long run. Ahithophel gave wicked counsel to Absalom; to render himself so hateful to his father, that he would never be reconciled to him; this cursed policy was of the devil. How desperately wicked is the human heart!

In this chapter is an account of Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, getting his inheritance by misrepresentation of him, and by presents to David, 2Sa 16:1-4; and of Shimei's cursing David as he passed along, which David bore patiently, and would not suffer others to avenge it on him, 2Sa 16:5-14; and of Hushai's offer of his service to Absalom, who admitted him to be of his privy council, 2Sa 16:15-19; and of the counsel which Ahithophel gave, 2Sa 15:20-23.
