"My people are fools;1 they do not know me.2 They are senseless children; they have no understanding.3 They are skilled in doing evil;4 they know not how to do good."523
I looked at the earth, and it was formless and empty;6 and at the heavens, and their light7 was gone.
I looked at the mountains, and they were quaking;8 all the hills were swaying.
I looked, and there were no people; every bird in the sky had flown away.926
I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;10 all its towns lay in ruins11 before the LORD, before his fierce anger.1227
This is what the LORD says: "The whole land will be ruined,13 though I will not destroy14 it completely.
Therefore the earth will mourn15 and the heavens above grow dark,16 because I have spoken and will not relent,17 I have decided and will not turn back.18"
At the sound of horsemen and archers19 every town takes to flight.20 Some go into the thickets; some climb up among the rocks.21 All the towns are deserted;22 no one lives in them.
What are you doing,23 O devastated one? Why dress yourself in scarlet and put on jewels24 of gold? Why shade your eyes with paint?25 You adorn yourself in vain. Your lovers26 despise you; they seek your life.2731
I hear a cry as of a woman in labor,28 a groan as of one bearing her first child-- the cry of the Daughter of Zion29 gasping for breath,30 stretching out her hands31 and saying, "Alas! I am fainting; my life is given over to murderers."32
