I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;1 all its towns lay in ruins2 before the LORD, before his fierce anger.327
This is what the LORD says: "The whole land will be ruined,4 though I will not destroy5 it completely.
Therefore the earth will mourn6 and the heavens above grow dark,7 because I have spoken and will not relent,8 I have decided and will not turn back.9"
At the sound of horsemen and archers10 every town takes to flight.11 Some go into the thickets; some climb up among the rocks.12 All the towns are deserted;13 no one lives in them.
What are you doing,14 O devastated one? Why dress yourself in scarlet and put on jewels15 of gold? Why shade your eyes with paint?16 You adorn yourself in vain. Your lovers17 despise you; they seek your life.1831
I hear a cry as of a woman in labor,19 a groan as of one bearing her first child-- the cry of the Daughter of Zion20 gasping for breath,21 stretching out her hands22 and saying, "Alas! I am fainting; my life is given over to murderers."23
